Abstract

ABSTRACT PYRIDINE-SUBSTITUTED NAPHTHOIMIDAZOLIUM COMPOUND AND METHOD OF PREPARING THE SAME The present subject matter discloses a pyridine-substituted naphthoimidazolium compound, designed as a water-soluble fluorescent probe for the selective detection of fluoride (F⁻) and hydroxide (OH⁻) ions in aqueous media. The compound exhibits distinct emission properties, emitting green light at 462 nm in acetonitrile and cyan light at 450 nm in its crystalline form. Upon interaction with F⁻ and OH⁻ ions, the compound undergoes fluorescence quenching with an emission shift to 388 nm, enabling sensitive detection with limits of 4.01 × 10⁻⁸ M for F⁻ and 1.29 × 10⁻⁸ M for OH⁻. The compound is synthesized through a multi-step process, involving cyclization, alkylation, and anion exchange reactions. Its high-water solubility (40 mg/mL) and selectivity make it suitable for environmental and industrial applications, including integration into light-emitting devices like LEDs. (FIG.1)
