Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION: s The Paraplegic Reverse Leaning Trike project aims to design and develop a three wheeled vehicle specifically for paraplegic users, providing enhanced stability, safety, and comfort. The vehicle adopts a tadpole configuration (1 00) and incorporates a tilting mechanism (103) that allows the trike to lean like ·a motorcycle during turns, improving cornering stability and reducing rollover risk. A double wishbone (401) suspension 1 o system further enhances ride comfort and braking performance by allowing independent movement of the wheels.A key innovation is. the leaning lock mechanism (300), which enables users to switch between tilting (301) and non-tilting modes (302), making the vehicle versatile for both paraplegic and non-paraplegic users. The trike's steering geometry (200) is optimized with an Ackermann steering system for efficient cornering, IS while brakes on both front wheels ensure higher braking efficiency. This design offers a safe and comfortable solution for paraplegic users while maintaining a dynamic riding experience.

5 specially designed trike for people with paraplegia. The trike is equipped with
modifications to accommodate paraplegic users, such as hand-operated controls for
steering, acceleration .. braking, and possibly shifting gears. The design ensures easy
entry and exit for users in wheelchairs, often incorporating features like adjustable seats
or ramps. In this design, two wheels are positioned at the front and one at the rear. This
10 configuration offers improved stability during turns, better balance, and handling,
making it safer for riders with mobility impairments. The trike is designed to "lean" into
turns, similar to how motorcycles and bicycles lean, which improves maneuverability
and enhances the rider's experience by allowing more fluid and dynamic movement.
This type of trike provides a balance between safety and the thrill of riding, making it
15 accessible to individuals with lower-limb impairments while still delivering a fun and
engaging driving experience.
PRIOR ART AND BACKGROUD:
20 [0002] BRMU8901582U2 self-propelled vehicle tricycle for paraplegic - TRICYCLE
PARAPLEGIC AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLE. The resulting Tricycle from this Utility Model
project is designed for urban and road use for three in-line passengers and loads that
allows for shared use by both autonomous paraplegic rider and non-rider pilot. The
equipment enables the Special Needs Carrier to drive and leave the vehicle without
25 relying on the help of others or having to leave their wheelchair to perform these events.
[0003] FR2762282A 1 All terrain tricycle for disabled user - The tricycle has hand
operated pedals and a frame which can disassemble. It has a triangular base frame with
welded tubes, two of which are joined to the steering head tube. The frame has a
saddle tube which receives the saddle support rod. The saddle is formed by a rear shell,
30 a front support shell and fixing stops. Three further tubes form side triangles attached to
the base triangle. The exterior ends of the tubes are connected by tubes and a
reinforcement to receive the suspension.
(0004] BR202020018626U2 Provision applied in paraplegic and semi-mobility protractor
- This is a product to be used in the sectors of equipment and accessories for the
35 disabled, elderly, paraplegics and qthers. The present refers to a protractor developed
~ to assist physically handicapped individuals, who were born with some type of physical .
reduced mobility. In other words, the product serves: paraplegic wheelchair users;
seniors; temporary disabled; individuals with hip and/or knee arthritis; every individual
with loss of ability to walk and move around alone. However, it must have the ability to
hold with the hands on the support and support arms.
5 [0005] FR2773766A 1 Tricycle with progressive steering caused by inclining driver's seat
- This relates to a device allowing a person in a low seat on a manual propelled tricycle
to cause a progressive steering by an action on the three wheels of the vehicle. This
action is done under the impulse of the rocker of. the driver's body o·pposing the
centrifugal force and causing a pendulum movement of the seat, transformed into
1 o progressive movement on the back, to actuate the wheels.
[0006] DE9420328U 1 Vehicle for the handicapped -The invention relates to an
attachment to an existing commercially available wheelchair, with the help of which
disabled people whose mobility a.nd strength in their arms and legs is no longer
sufficient to move a commercially available wheelchair over longer distances under their
1 5" own power are able to overcome longer distances or inclines independently. At the
same time, if one of their limbs is restricted in mobility, these are forced to move along
with them, thus maintaining or promoting their mobility.
[0007] FR3051662A1 TRANSFER DEVICE FROM A VEHICLE FOR MOTOR
HANDICAPS, AND ASSEMBLY OR KIT FOR ITS PLACEMENT -The present invention
20 relates to a transfer device between motor vehicles and vehicles such as wheelchair or
scooter, for motorists with motor disabilities, and a method and use of this device. The
autonomy of the motor handicapped or reduced mobility, that is to say, in the context of
the present invention, substantially incapable, or hardly able to move on foot, is limited
by the absence, in locations or premises .in which they are to be transferred, for
25 example in garages, car parks or other places reserved for them and including an
individual vehicle for handicapped persons, in toilets or shower rooms, with efficient and
costly means of transfer easily with reduced effort.
OBJECTIVE:
30 [0008] The main objective of our project is to create a tilting trike for paraplegic's people
and young age people by adding a tilting mechanism in normal motorcycles and
mopeds with better stability, comfort and good braking and engine performance.
CLAIM:
IIWE Claim,
1. A reverse trike (100) designed for paraplegic users featuring a tilting mechanism
(1 02) that allows the vehicle frame and wheels to lean in unison during turns,
thereby enhancing cornering stability and reducing the risk of rollovers, wherein
the tilting angle· can be adjusted up to 30 degrees based on road conditions and
rider input.
2. A double wishbone suspension system (401) integrated into the front wheel
assembly of the trike (1 00), enabling il)dependent movement of each wheel
during uneven· terrain encounters, improving ride comfort, vehicle stability,
traction, and braking performance .
. 3. A leaning lock mechanism (300) that allows the user to selectively enable or
disable the tilting function of the trike(1 02), providing flexibility for paraplegic and
non-paraplegic users to switch between leaning (301) and fixed~ frame (302)
modes, depending on the riding condition or user preference.
4. A steering geometry system utilizing Ackermann steering principles (200) ,
. wherein the inner front wheel turns at a sharper angle than the outer wheel
during cornering, achieving efficient turning, reduced tire wear, and improved
vehicle handling under various riding conditions.
5. A dual-front braking system (402) integrated into both front wheels of the trike,
ensuring enhanced braking efficiency and shorter stopping distances, specifically
designed to provide increased safety and conjrol during sudden braking or
emergency maneuvers on varying road surfaces.
