DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory skin disease with multiple phenotypically distinct subtypes. eg plaque, flexural, guttate, pustular or erythrodermic. Psoriasis has a major genetic component, with heritability estimated to be 60-90%. High-impact and difficult-to-treat psoriasis sites include scalp, face, nails, genitalia, palms and soles. Recognition and management of comorbidities (such as psoriatic arthritis, psychological, cardiovascular and hepatic diseases) is an essential part of holistic care for individuals with psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a chronic, genetically influenced, remitting and relapsing scaly and inflammatory skin disorder that affects 1 to 3 percent of the world's population. The diagnosis is made on clinical grounds, although histologic examination of a skin-biopsy specimen may be helpful. Psoriasis is a disabling, though rarely life-threatening, disease with a social and economic impact that is underestimated by physicians and other health care providers. Recently, progress has been made in understanding the pathogenesis of psoriasis, and therapeutic advances are improving the care of even severely affected patients. There are several types of psoriasis, including pustular, guttate, and arthritic variants.
Microscopically, psoriasis is characterized by markedly increased proliferation and incomplete differentiation of the epidermis, a marked increase in cutaneous blood flow, and leukocytic infiltration of the papillary dermis and the epidermis. Evidence indicating that psoriasis is immunologically-mediated includes therapeutic response to immunosuppressant medications, transfer of the disease via bone marrow transplantation in humans and by purified T-cells in mice bearing human prepsoriatic skin, and the presence of clonal T-cell receptor (TCR) rearrangements in psoriatic skin.
Acalypha indica Linn. is a weed, used traditionally for different skin diseases such as eczema and dermatitis in various parts of India. There are no previous in vivo studies reported on the antipsoriatic potential of this medicinal
