Abstract
ABSTRACT A method (100) for photo-catalytically degrading 2-chlorophenol, the method (100) comprising the steps of synthesizing zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) nanoparticles via a sol-gel method. The sol-gel method comprising the steps of mixing zinc nitrate and aluminium nitrate in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:2 with a chelating agent to obtain a mixture, stirring the mixture to form a homogeneous solution, heating the homogeneous solution to form a gel, drying the gel at a temperature in the range of 100-130oC to obtain an amorphous powder and calcining the amorphous powder at a temperature in the range of 1000oC – 1200oC to yield ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles. The method (100) further comprises introducing the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles into an aqueous solution of 2-chlorophenol and exposing the aqueous solution to ultraviolet light to activate the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles to photo-catalytically degrade the 2-chlorophenol.

Description:FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0001] This invention generally relates to a field of degrading 2-chlorophenol in particular relates to a method for photo-catalytically degrading 2-chlorophenol.
BACKGROUND
[0002] The subject matter discussed in the background section should not be assumed to be prior art merely as a result of its mention in the background section. Similarly, a problem mentioned in the background section or associated with the subject matter of the background section should not be assumed to have been previously recognized in the prior art. The subject matter in the background section merely represents different approaches, which in and of themselves may also correspond to implementations of the claimed technology.
[0003] Industrial wastewater frequently contains organic pollutants, including chlorinated phenols, which are highly toxic and resistant to biodegradation. Among these, 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) is commonly found in effluents from industries like petrochemicals, paper production, and pharma , Claims:1. A method (100) for photo-catalytically degrading 2-chlorophenol, the method (100) comprising the steps of:
synthesizing zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) nanoparticles via a sol-gel method, the sol-gel method comprising the steps of:
mixing zinc nitrate and aluminium nitrate in a stoichiometric ratio of 1:2 with a chelating agent to obtain a mixture;
stirring the mixture to form a homogeneous solution;
heating the homogeneous solution to form a gel;
drying the gel at a temperature in the range of 100-130oC to obtain an amorphous powder; and
calcining the amorphous powder at a temperature in the range of 1000oC - 1200oC to yield ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles;
introducing the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles into an aqueous solution of 2-chlorophenol; and
exposing the aqueous solution to ultraviolet light to activate the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles to photo-catalytically degrade the 2-chlorophenol.
2. The method (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles include a spinel crystal structure and a direct bandgap in the ra
