Abstract

ABSTRACT A method 100 for modifying and characterizing membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for alkaline water electrolysis, comprising selecting a porous polymer membrane, treating the membrane to enhance hydrophilicity, applying a catalyst layer comprising cobalt and nickel to the membrane, subjecting the membrane to sulfurization and coating the membrane with Iron-Nickel Layered Double Hydroxide (FeNi LDH) through hydrothermal treatment.

Specification

Description:FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0001] This invention generally relates to a field of alkaline water electrolysis and, more particularly, to a method for modifying and characterizing membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) in order to enhance the efficiency of water electrolysis processes.
BACKGROUND

[0002] The subject matter discussed in the background section should not be assumed to be prior art merely as a result of its mention in the background section. Similarly, a problem mentioned in the background section or associated with the subject matter of the background section should not be assumed to have been previously recognized in the prior art. The subject matter in the background section merely represents different approaches, which in and of themselves may also correspond to implementations of the claimed technology.
[0003] Alkaline water electrolysis is widely recognized for its potential in hydrogen production as a renewable energy source. However, efficiency limitations in alkaline water electrolysers nece , Claims:WE CLAIM:
1. A method 100 for modifying and characterizing membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for alkaline water electrolysis, comprising:
selecting a porous polymer membrane,
treating the membrane to enhance hydrophilicity,
applying a catalyst layer comprising cobalt and nickel to the membrane,
subjecting the membrane to sulfurization, and
coating the membrane with Iron-Nickel Layered Double Hydroxide (FeNi LDH) through hydrothermal treatment.

2. The method 100 as claimed in claim 1, wherein the polymer membrane is selected from recycled polypropylene materials such as grocery bags and face masks.

3. The method 100 as claimed in claim 1, wherein the membrane is characterized using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) to determine its conductivity and electrochemical efficiency.
