Abstract

ABSTRACT A method (100) for detecting driver impairment due to drowsiness or alcohol consumption. Further, the method comprising capturing real-time video data of a driver using an on-board camera. Further, the method (100) comprising the steps of processing the captured video data to detect facial landmarks associated with the driver's eyes and mouth. Further, the method (100) comprising the steps of calculating an eye aspect ratio (EAR) based on the detected eye landmarks to determine if the driver's eyes are open or closed. Further, the method (100) comprising the steps of calculating a mouth aspect ratio (MAR) based on the detected mouth landmarks to identify signs of yawning or smiling. Further, the method (100) comprising the steps of generating an alert signal when the calculated EAR or MAR falls below a predetermined threshold indicating potential drowsiness or alcohol consumption.

Specification

Description:FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0001] This invention generally relates to the field of driver safety systems and, in particular, relates to a method for detecting driver impairment due to drowsiness and alcohol consumption using real-time facial analysis and machine learning techniques, aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing the incidence of accidents caused by impaired driving.
BACKGROUND

[0002] The subject matter discussed in the background section should not be assumed to be prior art merely as a result of its mention in the background section. Similarly, a problem mentioned in the background section or associated with the subject matter of the background section should not be assumed to have been previously recognized in the prior art. The subject matter in the background section merely represents different approaches, which in and of themselves may also correspond to implementations of the claimed technology.
[0003] The increasing prevalence of road traffic accidents caused by driver impairment due to , Claims:1. A method (100) for detecting driver impairment due to drowsiness or alcohol consumption, the method comprising the steps of:
capturing real-time video data of a driver using an on-board camera;
processing the captured video data to detect facial landmarks associated with the driver's eyes and mouth;
calculating an eye aspect ratio (EAR) based on the detected eye landmarks to determine if the driver's eyes are open or closed;
calculating a mouth aspect ratio (MAR) based on the detected mouth landmarks to identify signs of yawning or smiling; and
generating an alert signal when the calculated EAR or MAR falls below a predetermined threshold indicating potential drowsiness or alcohol consumption.

2. The method (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the method (100) further comprising utilizing infrared imaging technology to enhance the detection of facial landmarks in low-light conditions, thereby improving the accuracy of the impairment detection.
