Electronic Voting System and enhanced Security features ABSTRACT: Voting is fundamental to democracy. Voting enables citizens to express their ideas, influence governance, and select representatives who reflect their values and goals. To maintain equity and integrity throughout the electoral process, it is imperative to provide security and dependability. In India, the electoral process originally depended on ballot papers for voting. This conventional approach entailed the distribution of paper ballots to qualified voters, who thereafter indicated their selections manually. The tallying of votes recorded on ballot papers was a rigorous procedure. The election process was considerably postponed due to the manual counting of most of these ballots. Accusations of booth capture were reported in multiple constituencies. Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were introduced in the 1990s to address several difficulties. The election process is expedited significantly due to electronic voting machines (EVMs), which display the total votes cast for each candidate in a specific region. EVM machines are transported to a secure location where the aggregate votes are compiled in the presence of the election commission and representatives of political parties to determine the final outcome. There is constant discourse over the security mechanisms of EVM machines.

EVM is an acronym for Electronic Voting Machine. It is a device that is employed to electronically record and tally the votes cast in elections. The Indian Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) system is also known as ECI-EVM, which refers to an EVM that is specifically designed, manufactured, and used for elections in accordance with the election procedure and rules established by the Election Commission of India and documented in the EVM manual. This designation distinguishes it from EVMs that are used in other countries. ECI - EVM comprises the Ballot Unit (BU), Control Unit (CU), and the later incorporated Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT). Direct Recording Electronic voting machine systems, or DRE voting machines, are a general category that encompasses EVMs. This is one of the numerous voting methodologies that are available globally. Paper ballots are not regarded as efficient or accurate as ECI-EVMs, as they eliminate the possibility of invalid votes due to unclear or improperly marked (stamped) paper ballots, reduce the time required for counting, and guarantee that a vote is registered for a single candidate only. The introduction of decentralised online voting systems powered by blockchain technology occurred in the early part of the 2010s. The concept of utilising blockchain technology for voting began to acquire momentum at this juncture. The transparency and security of blockchain technology were illustrated by the emergence of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. 1. Currently, the high costs and complexity of blockchain platforms render them unfeasible to transition to. Furthermore, it is presently impossible to transition entirely to blockchain-based e-voting.
2. In order to accomplish this, we must initiate the testing and implementation of these applications on a limited scale. This will enable us to accumulate data for analysis and enhance the technology over time.
3. The primary obstacle is to motivate individuals to implement these platforms and to provide them with the necessary experience and power to manage their privacy through the use of blockchain technology. Given that blockchain applications are not limited to cryptocurrency and e-voting, there are numerous others to investigate.
4. These initial endeavours will facilitate the progression of the subsequent generation. In order to advance the state-of-the-art in blockchain-based voting systems, future research should concentrate on addressing these challenges and investigating emergent technologies and methodologies.
5. This will enable researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to contribute to the creation of electoral processes that are more inclusive, transparent, and secure, and that maintain the integrity of democratic institutions and the principles of democracy.
