• To improve the overall wellbeing of the selected population
Problem Statement
Adolescents constitute over 20% of India's population. Adolescent suffer from various
forms of malnutrition because of their increased nutritional needs. Nutritional deficiencies
have widespread consequences, especially in adolescent. A malnourished female in the
younger age is likely to give birth to undernourished babies during delivery in future,
which transcends under nutrition toward future generation. Nutritional status among
adolescents is a key determinant of health outcomes. Malnutrition and Iron deficiency
anaemi~ (IDA) affects the health status of adolescents. In addition to causing mortality, it
also causes long-lasting effects on the growth, development, and physical fitness of
survivors. Malnourished children and adolescents are also at higher risk for impaired
growth, low immunity, poor cognitive development, and mortality. Nutritional problems
include problems of under nutrition, over nutrition, anaemia, and nutritional neglect. The
problem of nutrition is linked with poverty, socio-cultural practices, lack of education and
ignorance. Anaemia is widely prevalent among young adolescent girls. Pre-pregnancy
nutrition and· health are likely to affect foetal health, therefore it is necessary to impart
nutrition education. Iron deficiency due to anaemia is still the most common nutritional
cause. The prevalence of anaemia in India is 60 - 70% and is the second leading cause of
death accounting for 19% of all maternal deaths. Nutrition can be a key factor in affecting
women's health during adolescence and adulthood. Adolscents in rural areas need to avoid
the dangers of food, maintain a healthy immune system to avoid anaemia and nutritional
deficiencies also faulty eating behaviour Proper Nutrition during adolescence, regardless
of their urban, rural, and tribal background, requires utmost care and is important for
teenagers and who have not yet completed their growth and development. Various studies
in different parts of India have indicated that one-third of children or adolescents in India
have low birth rates.
Rationale of the Study
The current study focuses on assessing the prevalence of nutritional problems and
complications among the adolescents between I 0-19 years of rural, urban, and the tribal
population belonging to in and around Coimbatore District, Tamil Nadu.
During adolescence, poor diet, or lack of knowledge about adequate nutritional needs like
iodine, iron, folate, calcium, and zinc which can cause anaemia and future complications
during pregnancy and lactation. Hence, the results of the study among the adolescence
belonging to different areas will contribute to the understanding of various factors
associated with lack of nutrition and will help in creating awareness about consuming a
beneficial dietary pattern before pregnancy. The present study is planned to find out the
nutritional problems among adolescents, the socio-economic factors associated with it and
compare the differences between the urban, tribal and rural population and suggest suitable
measures and enhance the understanding of nutritional needs among them, t.hereby
improving adolescent health which is recognized as one of the significant components of
family welfare and future generation. The outcome of the study will also focus on
implementing effective interventions directed towards adolescents and improve their
nutritional status.
CLAIMS (not applicable for provisional specification. Claims should start with the preamble"
1/We claim" on separate page)
We Claim
I. Reduction in number of micronutrient deficiencies like iron deficiency anaemia, folate
deficiency
2. Changes in Knowledge Attitude and Practices assessment after intervention.
3. Quality of life of the children will be improved which paves the way for creating a
