Abstract
In recent times, coating systems composed of natural materials have been gained researcher’s interest and particularly the interest is to replace classical used materials such as synthetic polymers, which can have a negative effect on all living organisms. In addition, marked progress in herbal technology has led to the evaluation of their potential use in different fields, especially in industries such as Food, Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical. The permanent search for new type of coating materials which has new valences to obtain enhanced biodegradability and eco-friendly properties, accompanied by the shift in consumer’s habits towards bio-products led to the development of functional coating based on natural origin, as the coating is a common process in pharmaceutical production. The present research aims to critically evaluate the possibility of using natural ingredients especially red onion skin powder as a pharmaceutical film coating agent and to prove that the material has potential applications in pharmaceutical coating technology.

Specification
Description:Description: Film coating based on natural components used for the production of sold dosage forms like tablets, granules, pellets, nanoparticles and microspheres.
Field of the invention: The present invention relates to a composition for film coating of solid forms based on natural components and more particularly tablet film coating using onion skin powder.
Background of the invention: In last few decades, the use of natural products (components from natural origin) rather than chemical products continues to increase in food and cosmetic industry and this trend is expected to continue in pharmaceutical industry. Safety and eco- friendly properties in the production process are emerging as big factors and this is the reason why the natural materials become primary choice even in pharmaceutical coating process.
Coating of pharmaceutical dosage forms, particularly tablets is a well-known art and have been employed over 1000 years as its finding application in several ways such as protection of active ingredients from environmental factors like moisture, light and oxygen; modifying drug release in terms of rate, time and site; improves surface properties; reducing the drug degradation from gastric acid hydrolysis; protect the gastric mucosa from drug causes irritation. Coating also aids in patient compliance as it masks the unpleasant odour& taste, improves appearance, facilitate easy ingestion and increases mechanical strength.
Now a days, the development of new materials and production technology has new valences to obtain enhanced biodegradability and eco-friendly property has led to an increasing interest regarding the application of functional coatings based on natural materials. Hence, the present invention emerged with the development of novel film coating composition comprises of onion skin powder.
Detailed Description of the invention:
Film coating composition according embodiments of the present invention include onion skin powder as a main component, a film forming agent.
Onion (Allium cepa) is one of the most important vegetable crop worlds wide after Tomato. Onion production increasing every year by 25% in last 10 years with a total global production of around 98 million tons. Onion skin powder, which is a by-product derived from the onion industry, has been attracting significant interest as a potential functional ingredient for improving the overall quality of foods and cosmetics. It has been used for long time as a natural colorant and source of dietary fiber. Prior art, the present study explores the potential of onion skin powder as a pharmaceutical film coating agent.
Film coating composition also comprises plasticizer a second major component. The plasticizer preferably selected from the group consisting of glycerin, sorbitol syrup, propylene glycol, poly ethylene glycol 400-6000, lactic acid & citric acid esters, acetylated monoglycerides, fatty acids and their salts, ethyl sebacate, triacetin and hydrogenated castor oil& coconut oil. Most widely used plasticizers are Glycerol, Propylene glycol, Triacetin and Poly ethylene glycol 400. Plasticizer contents between 1-3% are highly preferable. The important factor to be considered here is concentration of plasticizer. Higher concentration of plasticizer may lead to bleeding (making the tablet surface feel oily) and reduced tensile strength.
Film coating composition can also comprise commonly used additives such as Coloring, Flavoring and Sweetening agents, Opacifying agents like titanium dioxide, Lubricants such as magnesium stearate, Wetting/Surface active agents such as tween and span, Fillers like lactose, dextrose, Anti-tacking agents like talc, Solvents such as ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, methyl chloride and acetone.
According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention the film coating composition comprises 10-30% by weight of onion skin powder as film forming polymer, 1-3% glycerin as plasticizer, 2-5% lactose as filler, 1-3% talc as anti-tacking agent, 1-2% titanium dioxide as opacifier, 3-5% tween 80 as surface active agent and isopropyl alcohol as solvent up to 100%.
Summary of the Invention:
Various aspects of the invention have been achieved utilizing preferred embodiment of film coating composition primarily comprised of onion skin powder such as improved elegance and surface properties, sustained drug release, shielding the formulation from environment factors and improved mechanical strength, good surface sealing and adhesion, no evidence of cracking and minimal increase in weight and thickness.
These and other features, advantages and objects of the present invention will be further understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art by reference to the specific claims.
