The present invention relates to the field of medical devices. Particularly, it relates to a digital blood pressure (BP) monitoring device that incorporates an interactive ICON-based display for ease of use in homes, targeting non-expert users or individuals with low literacy levels.________________________________________3. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
Hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases globally. Regular monitoring is essential, especially for the elderly, who are more vulnerable to high blood pressure and associated complications. However, due to the cognitive and physical limitations that come with aging, traditional blood pressure monitors, which rely on numeric or textual displays, can be challenging to operate and interpret.Existing digital monitors may not effectively cater to the elderly or those with vision impairment, illiteracy, or limited technical literacy. Thus, there is a need for a user-friendly digital BP monitor that uses visual icons to convey results clearly, eliminating the need for numeric literacy. This invention simplifies BP monitoring, making it more accessible to populations in domestic and rural settings.________________________________________4. OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION:
1. To provide a digital BP monitor that is easy to operate and understand, especially for individuals with low literacy levels.
2. To utilize icon-based visual representations for blood pressure readings, health status, and user instructions, making the device user-friendly for homes and non-medical environments.
3. To offer an interactive display that eliminates the need for complex textual information.
4. To provide an affordable and reliable BP monitor suitable for widespread domestic use. ________________________________________
5. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention provides an assistive digital blood pressure monitor equipped with a visual icon display, primarily designed to assist elderly users and low-literate individuals. The monitor uses an oscillometric method for blood pressure measurement and outputs results through emoji-based icons rather than numeric values. This visual display provides immediate feedback on the user's blood pressure status:
• Smiling Face to indicate normal blood pressure, Neutral Face to Indicates slightly abnormal blood pressure & Sad Face to Indicates hypertension or hypotension.
The device includes:
• A cuff for BP measurement, controller (e.g., Arduino UNO), blood pressure sensor, visual display unit (e.g., LED Dot Matrix), Audio & vibration feedback for additional sensory cues.________________________________________
6. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
1. Device Construction:
The assistive digital BP monitor includes the following components:
• Cuff: A strap that is placed around the user's wrist or arm to measure systolic and diastolic pressure.
• Microcontroller: Arduino UNO, responsible for processing the readings from the BP sensor and controlling the visual and audio outputs.
• Blood Pressure Sensor: A Sunrom Blood Pressure Module utilizing the oscillometric method for pressure measurement.
• LED Dot Matrix Display: A simple graphical interface that displays results in the form of icons, such as a smiling or neutral face, to easily indicate the user's health status.
2. User Interaction:
The device is operated through a single button for simplicity. Upon pressing the button, the cuff inflates and begins measurement. Once the measurement is complete, the results are displayed using one of the predefined icons (smiling, neutral, sad). Additionally, audio feedback is provided to assist users with visual impairments.
• Audio Prompts: The device emits audio cues, instructing the user to adjust the cuff if needed or indicating that the measurement is complete.
