Abstract
ABSTRACT Raising concems regarding the emerging contaminants in natural water system has made the researchers to focus on the development of compatible material for pollutant remediation. The bio-mat has been developed in the curTent research for the removal of colors and microbes from contaminated water systems. The bio-mat integrates advanced biosorbent materials within a biodegradable matrix, such as rice starch, to offer a sustainable and effective approach to water purification. Biosorbent mat has been prepared using matrix with natural jute yarn waste..biomass selected for its high removal ability. Tlu·ough further activation using carboxylic acid, increased removal of contaminants has been facilitated by impregnation of certain functional groups. The mat features a robust matrix material made of rice starch in which carboxylic activated jute yarn biomass was impregnated. The starch based bio-mat structure allows easy removal of color compounds that can be directly employed in the water system due to its supportive framework. The activated biosorbent mat was thoroughly studied and tested for its mechanical stability, compatibility, and removal efficiency. The bio-mat also possess a secondary layer of antimicrobial agents derived from garlic skin extract which inhibiis ihe growth ofmicro-orgartisms. The aclivalt:u bio-mat offers a comprehensive solution for water treatment combining high performance adsorption with antimicrobial protection.

ACTIVATED BIOSORBENT MAT FOR REMEDIATION OF POLLUTED SITES
I PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRPTION I
THE FIELD OF INVENTION (WATER TREATMENT)
The present invention focuses on innovative solutions for the purification and remediation of
contaminated water that are applicable in sectors such as wastewater treatment, industrial water purification,
environmental cleanup, and potable water supply.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The water treatment sector faces significant challenges due to increasing complexity of pollutants in
'water system. The growing concern for antimicrobial resistance has underscored the limitation of traditional
treatment options. The activated bio-mat based product offer a promising solution to challenges in the water
treatment by integrating biosorbent into a biodegradable mat structure. The biosorbent material- jute yam waste
used in the mat has been selected for its better adsorption ability. Jute yam waste is composed of natural fibers
that contribute to it surface properties and porosity. Chemical activation of jute yam waste with acids increases
the surface area and improves the functional groups that has a positive influence in adsorption process. The
Carboxylic acid used in the activation process introduces carboxyl functional groups that enhances the surface
charge of the jute fibers that increases the ability to attract and bind pollutant molecules from contaminated water.
Impregnation of carboxylic acid treated jute yam waste biomass on the biodegradable matrix material provides
a support and stable mat like material which can be directly applied in water systems. Rice starch, one of the
natural and biodegradable polymer is an effective substance that can be utilized in mat formation for pollutant
removal. Because of its film-forming qualities, non-toxicity, and availability, this renewable resource has various
advantages. When utilized in the creation of a water purification mat, rice starch may function as an adaptable
and long-lasting framework that facilitates the integration of diverse adsorbent substances to optimize the
removal of pollutant. Garlic skins naturally contain antimicrobial compounds which can be extracted and used
as a layer in the mat formation. In rural or isolated areas with limited access to clean drinking water, the activated
biosorbent mat can be utilized.in decentralized water filtration systems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Activated biomat with colour removal and antimicrobial activity developed with the impregnation of
carboxylic acid activated jute yam waste onto rice starch based support matrix .
ACTIVATED BIOSORBENT MAT FOR REMEDIATION OF POLLUTED SITES
I· COMPLETE SPECIFICATION I
Specifications
• The principal constituent of activated bio-mat includes activated jute yarn waste with rice starch matrix
which are naturally derived biocompatible material. The impregnation of activated biosorbent onto rice
starch matrix leads to fonnation of biodegradable matrix structure with antimicrobial and dye removal
properties that enhances the potable water purification ability.
• For the colour removal, jute yarn waste was activated by carboxylic acid that enhances the removal
abilities of biomass through surface improvement.
• The biodegradable matrix was prepared by casting method in which extracted starch from rice was casted
to specific shape and thickness.
• On the prepared ~atrix, activated jute yarn biomass was impregnated as the primary layer for the colour
removal from solutions.
• The garlic peel extract applied as a secondary layer impmts antimicrobial activity against Escherichia
coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus au reus.
• The appropriate concentration of the plasticizing ingredient, gelatin, has been applied to provide the
mechanical strength of the activated biomat.
ACTIVATED BIOSORBENT MAT FOR REMEDIATION OF POLLUTED SITES
I DESCRIPTION I
In the development of activated biomat with colour removal and antimicrobial ability, natural sources such as
rice starch, jute yarn waste, and garlic peel extract was utilized. Rice starch based matrix was prepared by
using plasticizers and gelatin as solidifier. The carboxylic acid based activation ofjute yarn waste is processed
to enhance its adsorption properties and is uniformly impregnated into the matrix to maximize the contaminant
removal. Additionally, the mat is infused with garlic peel extract which inhibits the growth of microorganisms.
The prepared biomat resulted in colour decolourization efficiency of around 99% and exhibited
significant inhibitory activity against Esch;;richia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus and
Staphylococcus aureus. The mat is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly choice for home, pmtable,
and commercial water filtration systems since it is made to withstand numerous cycles of usage and can be
regenerated by simply washing or gentle heating. The biodegradable materials of the mat provide a safe and
orderly breakdown after its intended use, therefore reducing its environmental effect.
